CAPE TOWN’S MOST EXCLUSIVE LUXURY HOTEL

아름다운 바다 경관을 바라보고 있는 The Silo Hotel은 남아프리카 케이프타운 중심부에 위치하고 있는 호텔로 지난 2017년 오픈했다. 박물관과 호텔의 만남이라는 독특한 컨셉의 호텔은 남아프리카 최대 규모의 자이츠 아프리카 현대미술관의 위층에 자리하고 있다. 이 건물은 원래 1921년에 지어진 건물로 당시 케이프 타운 시민들을 위한 곡식 저장 창고로 쓰였다. 호텔의 이름 또한 곡식 창고라는 의미의 Grain Silo에서 따와 ‘The Silo Hotel’이라 붙여졌다. 그 규모가 57m에 달하는 거대한 곡식 창고였던 이 건물은 당시 남아프리카의 역사와 문화를 고스란히 담고 있다.

The Silo Hotel occupies a very special location in the heart of Cape Town and has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo building which was originally built in 1924. The Silo Hotel has 28 keys across seven room categories, including a spectacular penthouse.

오래된 남아프리카의 역사와 문화, 그리고 예술에 대한 정신을 이어가기 위해 건물을 완전히 허물지 않고, 외형을 그대로 보존했다. 여기에 디자이너의 아이디어가 더해져 유니크한 외관을 자랑하는데, 특히 다이아몬드가 떠오르는 독특한 형태의 유리창이 인상적이다. 이는 오래된 램프의 다각형 곡면에서 영감을 받았으며, 특이한 디자인으로 인해 빛이 굴곡진 형태로 공간 내부에 유입된다.

거친 느낌의 거대한 곡식 창고를 화려한 고급 호텔로 탈바꿈하기 위해 영국의 유명한 건축 디자이너인 토마스 헤더윅이 디자인을 맡았고, 건물의 외형은 보존하면서도 내부에는 다양한 용도의 공간을 기획했다. 고전적인 요소와 현대적인 감각, 레지던스 다운 편안함과 안락함 등이 인더스트리얼풍의 외관과 색다른 균형을 이루고 있다. 박물관과 호텔의 만남으로 색다른 재미와 경험을 제공하는 The Silo Hotel은 총 9층으로 구성된 자이츠 현대미술관 건물 중 높은 층에 위치한다. 아래쪽에는 박물관과 미술관이 자리하고, 그 위로 The Silo Hotel의 28개 객실과 수영장, 레스토랑, 옥상 조각 공원 등이 마련되어 있다. 내부는 영국 문화가 반영된 인테리어로 고풍스러움과 모던함이 묘한 조화를 이루고 있다. 전 세계인들이 관심을 가지며 많이 찾고 있는 The Silo Hotel은 다양한 경험과 시설, 아름다운 자연 전경을 동시에 즐길 수 있는 곳으로 더욱 유명하다. 이에 NYT 선정 ‘2017년 꼭 가봐야 할 호텔 17’과 CNN 비지니스 트래블러 선정 ‘올해 꼭 가봐야 할 호텔 15’에 이름을 올리기도 했다.

The Silo Hotel is situated above Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) which will house the single largest collection of contemporary African art in the world. London based Heatherwick Studio was responsible for the reimagining of the exterior of the grain silo building, which contains both the museum and the hotel above. The greatest visible change to the grain silo’s monumental structure is the addition of the pillowed glass windows, inserted into the existing geometry of the upper floors. These windows bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, this will transform the building into a glowing lantern or beacon in the harbour.

Liz Biden, the owner of The Royal Portfolio, has meticulously designed and decorated the interiors of the hotel. Each of the 28 rooms is unique. Liz explains that “We always wanted to open a hotel in our home city of Cape Town. The Silo Hotel is an exciting and ambitious project which we believe will perfectly complement our existing properties and rank among the very best hotels in the world. The building is modern and industrial so the interior design contrasts that with the addition of comfortable, colourful and more playful touches.”

THE WILLASTON BAR & THE GRANARY CAFÉ & SILO SPA /

일과를 마치고 칵테일 한잔과 함께 남아프리카 특유의 분위기를 즐길 수 있는 The Willaston Bar는 호텔 6층에 위치하고 있다. 1924년 기존 Silo Complex에서 곡식을 처음으로 수출했던 선박의 이름을 딴 이곳은 천장부터 바닥까지 이르는 약 5.5m 높이의 유리창을 통해 케이프타운의 아름다운 전망을 즐길 수 있다. The Granary Cafe에서도 바다 전경과 함께 화려한 호텔 시설을 경험할 수 있는데, 현지 재료를 사용한 식사뿐만 아니라 애프터눈 티도 제공되어 여유로운 오후 시간을 보낼 수 있다. 또한, 별도의 프라이빗 다이닝룸을 갖추고 있어 새로운 차원의 식사 서비스를 제공한다. 이외에도 스파, 루프탑 정원 등 편의를 위한 다양한 시설이 준비되어 있다. 4층에 위치한 Silo Spa는 5개의 트리트먼트실을 갖추고 있으며, 최고의 휴식을 이끌어내는 테라피로 편안한 공간에서 고요함을 만끽할 수 있다. 또한, 체육관과 사우나, 네일샵 등 몸을 단장하고 릴렉스할 수 있는 다채로운 공간들이 준비되어 있다.

The Silo Hotel offers a wide range of dining experiences in Cape Town. Executive Chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert and her team have crafted a number of casual and contemporary menus that include lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, bar snacks and a wonderful Sunday Roast. Chef Veronica believes in good, honest and approachable food that showcases seasonal, local ingredients. Situated on the sixth floor of the hotel, The Willaston Bar is named after the first ship to export grain from the original silo complex back in 1924. With stunning views of Cape Town through the 5,5m high pillowed glass windows, there is no better place to enjoy a classic cocktail or a glass of wine from the carefully crafted and ever evolving list of local and international wines. No reservations are possible in The Willaston Bar. A light, a la carte breakfast is available in The Willaston Bar from 8am until midday.
